Dolphin Reports

Dolphin Report - November, 2011

Plenty of large pods (averaging 34 dolphins per pod) have been spotted at West Beach and down South.Large Dolphin Pod

We only spotted Common dolphins once in November, which is below average.

Majority of days in November were overcast, making it harder to find the pods. Interaction was also down as the pods were constantly feeding, this may have something to do with Adelaide’s new desalination plant.

The water late November has cleared up and we expect early December to be AMAZING!

All seals have moved away from the area, but will hopefully return around February.

Dolphin Report - October, 2011Dolphin Watching

October started off well with our local dolphins in close and lots of dolphins down south.  During the latter part of October our local pods had moved away which left only the Southern water pods to swim with, this has the advantage of getting into clearer water with visibility around 20 metres.  At the moment there has been a small pod of eight Common dolphins spotted and we swam with them of three different occasions throughout October.  There were lots of penguins and seas birds around at the end of October so it is expected November to once again be a great month for bigger pods of Common and Bottlenose dolphins.

Dolphin Report - September, 2011Dolphin Under water

What an AMAZING month for dolphin numbers. Every day in September we counted more than 60 dolphins per trip, with most of them being our local pods.

All pods have been seen in the squid grounds and further south. There are a few seal around also which is exciting to see.

Overall excellent interaction for September.

Dolphin Report - May, 2011

May was a wet and windy month but surprisingly the visibility was still very good. Plenty of dolphins North and South as far as Brighton.

Dolphin Report - April, 2011

April saw an abundance of bait fish around Glenelg and further north, this lead to dolphin numbers increasing in the area.

Most first swims took place within 5 minutes of leaving the marina. We even got to swim with the Common dolphins’ just out from Henley beach in only four metres of water; this was definitely a highlight as it was the first time we have ever spotted common dolphins so far north and in such shallow water. Bottlenose dolphins are starting to move back to the Brighton feeding grounds.

 March 2011

Dolphin Report - March, 2011

There were not many dolphins around this March, however the pods that we did get played hard with the swimmers.

Pods were mainly north of Glenelg feeding on pilchard schools, but the water clarity is not as good North as it is South.

 Dolphin Report - February, 2011

The weather in February was fantastic with great visibility and interaction – even from pods with new borns.February 2011

Fourteen Hammerhead sharks were spotted throughout February, this is more than we have seen in the eleven years of operation. The increase in Hammerhead sightings is most likely due to the large schools of garfish moving through – a favourite for the Hammerhead. These sharks are not a risk to the swimmers as they are non aggressive and the largest one we saw was 6ft.

A few times in February we got to swim with Common dolphins, as most swim have been down south.

Dolphin Report - January, 2011January 2011

January this year was exceptionally good with consistent smooth seas and plenty of dolphins down south. We saw six pods of common dolphins during January, which is always a highlight.

There is plenty of bait fish around and the seals have come back.

The interaction has been excellent with great visibility and lots of new born dolphins. All new borns have been brought over to the swimmers, this has only really started happening in the last three years.
