May 2010Dolphin Report - May, 2010

May has seen many dolphins close to the Glenelg area. The local pods are also moving back into the Seacliff area, where fishermen are catching squid in close to shore. The interaction through May has been very good.

We have been lucky enough to see seals close to Glenelg and towards Marino Rocks.

Two unnamed dolphins have been coming into the Marina for a few hours at a time giving restaurant diners a great experience.

Dolphin in April

Dolphin Report - April, 2010

The dolphins are still hanging out close to Glenelg. The dolphin interaction has been great with the swimmers, however we did have a couple of good rains in April. The rain unfortunately destroyed the clarity of the water and forced us to head away from the larger pods and head south into cleaner water.

Dolphin Report - March, 2010

March Dolphin

Dolphins have been close to Glenelg during March, with most of the swims taking place within the first 5 minutes of departing the Marina. There has been a small school of pilchards along the metropolitan beaches, so this would be why the dolphins are staying so close to shore.

The water clarity for March was mostly very good, this was great when we had the new borns coming into the swimmers. Seals have been spotted on most trips, along with a few penguins. We saw a game played by a pod of dolphins in which they would harass puffer fish until they puffed up and floated to the surface, then they would toss the puffer fish to each other (similar to a game of catch). There were around seven puffer fish used in the game – watching this was very entertaining.

Dolphin Report - February 2010

Dolphins in February 2010

February was a pretty good month compared to previous February’s. There has been three new borns so far and all of them have come to the bow with their mothers, but not down the back with the swimmers.

Many of the swims in February the dolphins have stayed their distance from the swimmers and spent more time at the bow of the boat.

Dolphin numbers where also down but we expect this to change in March when the pods should start moving close to Glenelg to feed on the annual pilchard schools close to shore.

Dolphin Report - January 2010

Dolphin in January 2010January we did not see a lot of local Bottlenose dolphins in the area. There were a few Bottlenose dolphin pods out wide and some Common dolphins down south for most of January.

The conditions have been good for most of January with good visibility, although interaction time dropped later in the month.

Late January we saw our first new born for the season and expect to see a few more ‘pop’ up in February.
