Dolphin Report - May, 2009
There has been excellent interaction from local pods of dolphins. This year’s newborns are playing hard with the swimmers with a lot of jumping. Both the watchers and the swimmers are having good experiences.
There have been large pods of dolphins out wide off Glenelg (‘Two fins’ pod and ‘TW’s pod). Not many dolphins have been seen past Marino Rocks, but a few seals in close to shore. Lots of penguins close to Glenelg.
Dolphin Report - April, 2009
There have been a lot of dolphins in close the Glenelg. This years newborns started to play with the swimmers later in the month, however the Mums were not to far away.
There have been Common dolphins in the deeper waters down South, although most of the bird activity was close to Glenelg or North of Glenelg.
Fur seals have been seen around the blocks off of Glenelg and close to shore at Marino Rocks.
May’s swims should be good and good interaction.
Dolphin Report - March, 2009
March was a good month for watchers, unfortunately not so good for swimmers. This is mainly due to the amount of newborn calves this year, with nine in total, a great effort. Mothers don't often let their newborns get to close to the swimmers, only allowing a quick swim by, this being the only joy for swimmers.
The water visibility late march has been good and the interaction is expected to be good again from mid-April onwards.
There have only been a few seals around the Glenelg area and most of the sea-birds have moved off with the Common Dolphins. Boat traffic has increased again out from Glenelg, with jet skis and even a charter boat chasing pods of dolphins.
Dolphin Report - February, 2009
There has been good visibility and calm waters throughout February.
The five new born Bottlenose dolphins that were born in January are from our local pods from Seacliff and Marino Rocks. All mums have brought their babies over to the bow of Temptation, but not back to the swimmers. This will change late March when the interaction should be excellent as the new borns move further from their mothers.
A small pod of Common dolphins (six) have been feeding out from Glenelg, with the increased bird activity late February we should see larger numbers of Common dolphins moving into the area.
Seals are no longer resting at Glenelg, this would be due to harassment by people trying to get close to them.
Dolphin Report - January, 2009
This January has been much better than previous January’s, with good visibility. There have been a lot of dolphins in close to shore, just off of Glenelg that have been quite active.
We have been graced with five new born Bottlenose dolphins in January, which is very exciting, although the dolphin interaction with the pods with new bourns has not been very good. This however will get better late February and March, creating a lot of fun for the swimmers.
There have been no seals or sea lions around the Glenelg area in January.
